Microsoft tries to patent computer verb conjugation

Wednesday, September 6th, 2006

According to the US Patent and Trademark Office website, Microsoft is attempting to patent the selection and conjugation of verbs by a computer program. Other sources reporting this news weren’t sure what Microsoft had up their sleeve, but I dug around the patent filing, pulled some URLS out of the xeroxed diagrams, and figured out that it’s just a feature they’re trying out on their Encarta Encyclopedia Homework Help site.

It’s nothing impressive really… In fact, it’s quite ridiculous; just think of it as a HTML version of 501 Spanish Verbs. Would textbook verb conjugation tables count as prior art? And what about similar online programs like verbix.com?

Hopefully Microsoft’s patent application will be denied. It kind of reminds me of the old Onion article where Microsoft tries to patent ones and zeroes.

If the Corporate World met Web 2.0

If the corporate world redesigned their logos by Web 2.0 design practices. Some of these are actually half decent, but a few of them just make me cringe…

Wifi at Arbat McCafe

Monday, June 19th, 2006

The McCafe on Old Arbat is now offering some smoking-fast free wifi. Okay, I’m completely rescinding my praise of this wifi at McCafe; I’ve been here a few times this week as we don’t have our network set up in the new apartment and it has been consistently cutting out every five minutes or so… Erghh…

Yandex Referaty. Academic Integrity po-russky, pt 6

Saturday, April 8th, 2006

While we’re on the topic of term papers and plagiarism, let me mention a recent April Fool’s Day joke played by Yandex, the Yahoo of Russia.

On April 1, 2006 Yandex announced on its company news blog that they’re rolling out an exciting new service geared towards “students, designers, journalists, academics, modern writers, and anyone who may have to write a certain length text on a certain topic.” Perhaps they could add future-presidents to that list…The service is called Яндекс Рефераты and it claims to generate unique academic abstracts on a variety of topics.

I captured a screenshot of the site just in case they take it down soon after April:

Yandex Referaty

Simply choose from the list of topics and Yandex ‘generates’ a unique 200-word essay. But what about those pesky accusations of plagiarism?

Нажав на кнопку “Написать реферат” вы лично создаете уникальный текст, причем именно от вашего нажатия на кнопку зависит, какой именно текст получится - таким образом, авторские права на реферат принадлежат только вам..

By pressing the “Write essay” button you’ll create a one of a kind text. Moreover, because the composition entirely depends on the click of your mouse, all rights of authorship belong solely to you.

He heh… Gotta love the reasoning there. Not only is it not plagiarism, but it actually solves the problem of plagiarism:

По замыслу Яндекса новый сервис должен навсегда закрыть проблему поиска рефератов в Сети. Студентам больше не придется списывать чужие тексты, а преподавателям — заниматься доказательством плагиата. Наконец-то и те, и другие смогут вплотную заняться содержанием.

By design, the new Yandex service should once and for all solve the problem of people searching for term papers on the internet. Students no longer need to copy others’ works, and teachers will no more have the difficult task of proving plagiarism. Finally, they and others can earnestly focus on content.

They’ve got a great sense of humor to do this April Fool’s Joke right on the heels of the news that Putin’s dissertation may contain plagiarism.

More Wi-Fi in Moscow

Wednesday, March 29th, 2006

WiFi really seems to be catching on in Moscow. Yandex already has 199 free hotspots in cafes and restaurants and Golden Telecom has announced that they plan to set up at least 5000 paid hotspots across the city in 2006.

Tymoshenko: Google sent me here

Monday, March 27th, 2006

Suddenly, due to the elections in Ukraine, my site is getting hundreds of hits per day from people searching for Tymoshenko images. They’re ending up at my January 31, 2005 post, where I point out the former prime minister’s resemblance to a certain Hollywood heroine:

Tymoshenko and Leia

And it seems I’m the #10 search result at Google Images for “tymoshenko”. Not sure how that happened.
