This past Saturday some friends and I took a daytrip to Suzdal’, one of the Golden Ring cities. It rained the whole drive there, but as soon as we pulled into the quiet city the the skies dried up and we were able to walk around without umbrellas. I’d been there several times before, so this trip was more for the company and interesting photographs than anything else.
Here are a few things I saw:

This past week I came across Strobist’s tutorial on building your own Do-It-Yourself Macro Photo Studio for less than $10. Since I’ve been eager to improve my macro photo skills, I decided to give it a go. The materials were slightly more expensive than I’d expect them to be in the States, but I still managed to get the tracing paper and posterboard for less than $6.
Once I had scrounged up a decent cardboard box, it only took me about 15 minutes to construct my mini macro studio. Lighting turned out to be the most challenging aspect of my experimentation, but this was partly because I was using a simple floor lamp (minus lampshade) as my primary light source.
So, here are the fruits of my first attempts with the mini macro studio:

Harvey Kane has a great article in the latest A List Apart on creating an automatic magazine layout for photos with a simple PHP script.

Yes, I know I’ve been neglecting my site for some time now. My work and personal life have been busy lately, so that will remain my excuse. I’ve got about 30 topics scribbled down to blog on, but I can’t seem to find the time.
I was supposed to move to my new apartment this past week, but that keeps getting postponed as the remodeling is still not finished. They turned off my hot water here until the 20th of June, so every shower feels like a polar bear plunge in Lake Superior.
I’m really excited for this weekend as I’ll be taking a three day trip to St. Petersburg with some friends. Hard to believe, but it’s been about two years since I was last there.
Here’s a recent HDR photo I took to tide you over for now:
