My previous entry on Ukraine was about a week old, I just hadn’t had time to get my laptop to a wi-fi hotspot to post it. I hope to get ADSL in my apartment next month. Then posting may resume with some regularity.

A lot has happened since then. The Ukrainian parliament has given Prime Minister Yanukovich the boot, annulled the results of the election, and has ordered for a new election to take place at the end of December.

They’re calling this the Orange Revolution. It’s clearly a reference to last year’s Rose Revolution in Georgia. I wonder what ex-Soviet state will stage a colored revolution next. . .

It’s not clear if Yanukovich will run in this second take on the election, but it’s clear that he’s lost a lot of the support that he has apparently once had. Leonid Kuchma is distancing himself from the former prime minister and it looks as though Yanukovich’s former campaign manager could take his old boss’ place on the ballot.

It’ll be interesting to see what happens to Kuchma after all of this. If Yuschenko ends up winning, my guess is that the former president of Ukraine will end up behind bars.

And how will Putin’s attitude change with these events?

Even though some things have become clearer in the past two days, there are still many questions that remain to be answered.

Wes

Do you intentionally say “Ukraine” stead of “the Ukraine?” Do you say “Netherlands” or “the Netherlands?” What about “when I was in …”

Just curious about your take on this.

He heh. . . Yes, Wes, I ‘intentionally’ say “Ukraine” instead of the “the Ukraine”, and I also have reasons for it.

What I don’t have is time to explain those reasons right now. You can expect a post in the next few days covering that topic and the analogy (?? ??????? or ? ???????) that exists in Russian. I hope you’ll check back and contribute to the conversation that ensues.

TheSpinningOne (a Moscow girl =] )

first of all, i wanted to thank you, Tom, for what you’re doing - it’s really interesting to know a non-Russian point of view on the things.

and the second thing is that i absolutely agree with you when sayin “Ukraine\the Ukraine” - and tht same analogy of ?? and ? came to my mind… are we Ukrania-phobs?.. =)
