Hi Tom!

Please please please let the Cheburashka joke be the last Russian joke that you ever post on your wonderful site. First off, you don’t seem to get Russian humor. Second, people are coming to this site to learn more about your highly eventful life, outstanding literary skills, and your distinct outlook on the Russian and world politics, religion, news, meaning of life, atomic structure, mysteries of DNA, enigmatic Russian soul, as well as other topics ranging from your favorite color of underwear to the basics of efficient web-building - NOT to read some old Russian jokes that they last heard when they were in kindergarten.

Sincerely flabbergasted,
Guest

Well, thanks for your honesty.

I’m not sure why you conclude that I don’t understand Russian humor just because I posted that Cheburashka joke. I didn’t even make any comments on it. Russians may have heard that joke since they were in Kindergarten, but most people who read my site are Americans learning Russian and such jokes are amusing, easy to understand, and new to us.

I will admit, however, that Russian humor (as well as many other things Russian) is still a great mystery to me. My year in Moscow has surely given me the ability to appreciate a portion of Russian comedy (Maxim Galkin and political jokes, mostly), but I’m not a huge fan of KVN or any of that stuff.

Jokes do, of course, require a decent understanding of the culutre to be fully appreciated. I still have a ways to go in that respect; I am far from grasping that elusive ‘Russian soul’.

Still, there are some silly Russian jokes that just aren’t funny to me at all and I don’t think it’s because of a cultural disparity. Like the one about the hedgehog running through the grassy field and being tickled by the tall grass. . . That does nothing for me but it makes some of my Russian friends’ bellies ache with laughter.

Either way, jokes are not and never will be a big part of my site. If anyone wants to read about Russian humor, I’d point you in this direction:

[…] About two years ago I was scolded by one of my Russian readers for posting a simple Cheburashka joke here on my site. Apparently they’d come to expect something more hard-hitting and inquisitive from Digenis.org. […]
