Tristan informs us that Hewlett-Packard is unveiling an innovative device which will allow users to silkscreen labels onto CDs and DVDs.

According to the HP press kit, Lightscribe technology will be introduced later this year providing consumers with professional CD labeling capabilities and eliminating the need for those crappy sticker labels and sharpie markers.

The coolest part is that this silkscreen labeling process will be done using the CD/DVD drive’s current laser. That is, by using a special HP Lightscribe disc in your current CD/DVD burner (with minimal hardware and firmware adjustments) you can use this technology. Simply burn the data on one side of the disc and then flip it over to silkscreen the label onto the other side.

I’m hoping that it’s as sweet as it sounds.

Wow, that would be sweet.

I second that sweetness. Hmm…

From what I’ve read, that’s not quite accurate. You will use special media, but you’ll also have to have a LightScribe compatible CD or DVD burner. It’s my understanding that the new drives and media should be available in early 2005. The cost is supposed to be only slightly higher than current drives and media, but we’ll have to wait and see.
